purple thing.

Volkswagen Thing – that’s what this vehicle is called in the USA. In Germany (where the Volkswagen company is based) the vehicle is called Type 181, and nicknamed the “Kurierwagen.” “Kurier” means “courier.” (“Volkswagen” means “people’s car”). In Mexico, the vehicle is called “Safari,” and in the UK is called “Trekker.”

Back in the late ’70’s and early ’80’s, these vehicles were a fairly common site. But until today, I hadn’t seen one in many years! These vehicles were last made in 1983.
