a brief commentary on womanhood.
“American women, I believe, actually feel the same as hispanic women about weight. A desire for the comfort of fullness. And, when that desire is suppressed for style, and deprivation allowed to rule, dieting, exercising American women become afraid of everything associated with being curvaceous. Such as wantonness, lustfulness, sex, food, motherhood. All that is best in life.”
– From the screenplay for the movie, “Spanglish,” written by James L. Brooks.
This part of the film was spoken by a woman doing a voice-over..supplying the narration for the film.
She was saying these lines while, on screen, one of the main characters, a beautiful mexican domestic was helping a girl in the house she worked at to accept herself, and the girl’s mother, a nutcase, was out running and running and running..
I have worked out in many gyms, and at most of them, there have been a few women who I’ve observed running on treadmills for at least an hour, at almost top speed.
These women have looked emaciated.
I have wondered why they were doing this.
Perhaps some of them were running to try to conform to some messed up idea of “style” they had in their heads, and ran so hard and so much, they no longer had breasts, or curves.
One woman, a relative of my sister-in-law, was so obsessed with fitness, and became so skinny, that she was never able to have children. She had no body fat at all, and had damaged herself somehow. It is possible to move beyond the point of fitness, until one becomes ill.
This segment of the script of “Spanglish” really made me think.
Perhaps some of the women on the treadmills, or out there running, the women who are really over-doing it, and removing many traces of physical womanhood, are doing this because of some terrible concept of fashion or style that they have in their minds, and are thinking they want to conform to this imagined, and false ideal.
They are killing themselves to conform to what is in their minds.
And they are alienating themselves from men, and their own true feminine nature, in the process.
Yes, men do like women who are physically fit, but men also like women with curves.
And women.. these women.. need to realize what is healthy and what is not. And they need to realize this for themselves.
