a very brief linguistics lesson.

January 19, 2015

From a posting on Quora.com, a most intersting website, where almost any question can be answered.

The question: “What are some of the best comebacks to a teacher?”

Here’s an answer I like:

A linguistics professor was lecturing to his English class one day. “In English,” he said, “a double negative forms a positive. In some languages, though, such as Russian, a double negative is still a negative. However, there is no language wherein a double positive can form a negative.”
A voice from the back of the room piped up, “Yeah, right.”- Alan Bell.

Here’s the other answer I like:

“This was a communication and pronunciation lecture in my graduation.

Teacher : Sugar‘ is the only word in english dictionary where ‘s‘ is pronounced as ‘sh‘.

A voice popped up from somewhere in the class – “Are you sure?” – Akhil Gaur.
